For the past two months I’ve been questioning whether or not I should sell my car. I pay for a bus pass, car insurance and gas every month! That’s a lot of money to cough up per month. Money I do not have.
I drive my car to work, my friends’ house, to the mall—almost everywhere except school. I don’t drive it to school because parking downtown is impossible. When I do find parking, it’s $10 a day. That’s $50 a week, $200 a month—not to mention gas! But as I was scraping the frost off my windshield this morning, I though about my command start and how much I love it.
Winter is coming. Fast. I hate walking to the bus stop, waiting for eight minutes, and being late for class because the bus can’t handle winter. When I was in university I would skip class because of the cold. Now, I’m in CreComm— I can’t skip anymore. I also go to school Monday-Friday.
I see myself pressing that command start button to my 2007 Hyundai Tiburon on a beautiful winter morning. Then getting in to my toasty coupe and saving myself 15 minutes in transportation time. I love my car—especially in the winter.
How much am I really spending on transportation?
My bus pass is about $67 a month. Not bad, but not the best either. The good news is I can claim them on my taxes. I also pay for the student bus pass—that saves me about $15.
My car is paid off, so I pay about $140 a month on insurance, and about $70 every two week on gas (give or take). It’s more expensive than a bus pas, but way more convenient too. That’s why I have both.
I bought my Tiburon this summer after I wrote off my 2001 Toyota Celica. 2007 Tiburons like the one I have go for $7,000-$10,000. I bought mine in a private sale for $6,800—a really great deal! It has a Viper alarm system, command start and only 60,000 kms! I thought about selling it for $7,500, to make money, but I only have two more years of school. If I sell it now, I may not find another car for such a great deal. I also thought about changing the insurance the leisure insurance because that would lower my payments by $40. But then I would have to bus more because leisure insurance only allows the vehicle to be driven five times a month. I drive my car about 5 times a week.
What to do, what to do…
I don’t want to make any crazy decisions quite yet, but I would love to lower my payments.
Let me know when you think. Do you own a car and pay for a bus pas too? Leave a comment!
