I spent over $46 bucks last week on food. Not groceries but take out and fast food. Tisk tisk. If I told you I spent it on food from Hy’s Steakhouse or The Keg you might think, “oh, well that’s not too bad” because those restaurants are expensive, and you’re getting quality food. But nope, I spent it on Tim Hortons, Chinese take out and Mc Donald’s.
Are you spending your money on crappy food?
This week, I challenge you to make a note in your phone (or buy a journal if you’re old school), and write down the place and the amount you spent on food. At the end of the week, add it all up! Then ask yourself again “am I spending my money on crappy food?”
I did this. Most of my money was wasted on coffee, bagels and sandwiches. Think about it, 6 coffees in a week, at $2 a pop. That’s $12 gone. Two weeks, and that’s $24. Maybe your didn’t hear me, twenty-four dollars on coffee. You can make coffee at home for cheap or free if you drink your parents. If you want flavoured coffee, just buy those creamers and add them—hazelnut is my favourite!
If you’re high-class, you’re going to get your coffee from Starbucks. So, 6 cups a week, at $4 a cup, THAT’S $24 A WEEK. $48 EVERY TWO WEEKS. Hey, university girl in lulu leggings and UGG boots, RESIST YOURSELF! You don’t need Pumpkin Spice Lattes everyday.
Do you have that kind of money to throw around? I sure don’t.
The reality is, eating out is convenient. But there is a time a place for it. Birthdays, parties, study dates, dates etc. are all good reasons to go out to eat. But eating out ‘just because’ isn’t . This money could be spent on more important things like bills and gas.
Start making your lunch the night before class so you don’t have to make time in the morning. I make all my food on Sunday, pack it up and put it in the freezer so it’s fresh till the end of the week. I also pre-set my coffee maker, so I just have press start when I wake up.
Figure out how much you’re spending on food, then make a change! You’ll figure it out!
