I’m a receptionist for a health care company. I answer phones and tell clients their schedules. It’s not bad, and the pay is great, but it is so hard for me to pick myself up and drive to work. On the way to work is when I encourage myself to quit.
“I only have two years left, how much debt could I possibly get into if I don’t work?”
Never say this to yourself. Student loans are great for tuition, living expenses, and other needs we have, but if you’re already working stick it out.
When I started Cre Comm I was working three days a week (18.5 hours). It was too much. I explained to my boss what my expectations are as a student, and he was more than willing to cut hours. I worked two days a week (13.5 hours). It was still too much. Now I work one day a week (8.5 hours). My pay cheques are small, but it’s enough to pay all my bills and save a little. I could’ve quit because I had too many hours, but I was honest with my boss and he helped me out. I think he respected me for that.
The point I am trying to make is that any work is great! It’s money in your pocket. I learned that school comes first, and I should tweak work around it. Last week I didn’t work one shift—I was too busy with homework and projects.
It’s our job as students to find a balance, but never let a part-time job come in the way of our future career. Also, don’t make emotional decisions about work when you’re stressed, tired or confused, because you might regret it. I don’t think I’m the only student who does this (at least I hope not).
Winter break is sooner than we think—hang in there.
